Tipper Cross (1616), Tipper, Naas, Co. Kildare3D ModelNoAI
National Monument KD019-039004- In the 1897 Journal of the Co. Kildare Archaeological Society, a query sought information on the individuals commemorated on this cross. Sir Arthur Vicars had identified the coat-of-arms on the cross as those of the Delahyde and Walsh families. In 1902, Lord Walter FitzGerald, using various 17th century sources, proposed that the initials were those of John Delahyde and Margary Walsh. In summery, Peter Delahyde (d. 1625), of Punchestown, had as heir his nephew, Michael, who was the son of John and Margary. In the 17th century, a Punchestown House (now gone), was located only 1.7 km form Tipper graveyard. Other sources indicate that John Delahyde died in 1616. Although, with modern caution, we would be less confident than Lord Walter was of his attribution, his research is, nonetheless, compelling. Bib: FitzGerald, W.
