Toomyvara Effigial-Tomb (TN022-070006-)3D Model
Poorly preserved remains of an Augustinian Friary (TN022-070002-) dedicated to St Mary founded after 1140 on the site of a monastery dedicated to St Donán, in the village of Toomevara (Tuaim Uí Mheára), Co. Tipperary. Fifteenth-century effigial-tomb lies outside the southern wall at the eastern end of the Augustinian Friary. The tomb-cover depicts John O’Meara, possibly the same John, who in 1404 AD, was the warden of the Augustinian monastery of St. Mary. Above his head, is an equal-armed cross with lettering below the arms. The centre of the cross has a star-shaped floral-pattern. A band of stiff-leaf foliage separates the cross from John who is dressed in a triangular-shaped monastic scapular, with clasped hands at waist level. A partially legible Latin inscription in Black Letter runs along the edge of the slab, which reads ‘HIC JACET IOHES OMAR? ‘Here lies John O’Mar’, probably John O’Meara.
