It’s a tortoise I made in 3D Coat, as an exercise to learn the software. Usually I use Blender. I really enjoyed 3DCoat, especially the voxel sculpting and the painting. I liked how easy it was to move back and forth from sculpt to paint, and from voxel to surface/multires. I didn’t love the retopology tools, mostly because I can already retopologize things in Blender… but I’ll definitely use them again for less difficult assets. The UV tools were fast and almost effortless to use.
The tortoise is mostly based on various Galapagos Giant Tortoise pictures I found, but I also took some liberties. The goal was to make it realistic without spending more than 3 days learning the software (Sculpt, paint, retopologize, UV unwrap, bake/export). In the end, I spent the 3 days, thought about it a bit, and used another half day to improve the texture (a lot!) with the knowledge I gained during the first pass. I did the rig/walk-cycle in Blender.
