The Republic of Macedonia is among the countries that lie on or near the Mediterranean basin, an area of the globe where historically there have been large movements of civilizations and cultures. Each of these cultures has left its mark on the territory of the modern Republic of Macedonia. One such cultural and historical monument which is also a religious building is the monastery “Treskavec” near Prilep. Particular attention attracts the church “Dormition of the Mother of God”, built in the 13th century over the remains of an ancient temple. The monastery complex throughout history has often been set on fire, demolished but also renewed. Unfortunately such is its present condition. It is considered to be one of the 100 most endangered historical monuments in the world.
