- Cylindrical trunks were popular among officers during the Revolutionary War. Captain John Armstrong (1755-1814) likely used this trunk to transport personal belongings such as clothing and writing supplies. The covering is probably deer hide, and it retains some of the hair which was left on to help waterproof the trunk.
