This ivory tusk was recovered from site 35F in the English Channel, associated with the TV series Enslaved, which set out to tell the story of the Transatlantic Slave Trade through a series of shipwrecks associated with the trade. Site 35F shipwreck is likely a Royal Africa Company wreck dating between the 1670s-1680s. To our understanding 35F is the earliest shipwreck associated with the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Archaeologist Mallory Haas decided to produce a photogrammetry model of the tusk, Martin Davies has created this model. Because of the issues with transporting ivory even with this historic context, it is difficult for researchers to see it in person or send samples. Creating a high resolution, detailed model allows a greater audience to easily see rare finds like this on in context with a shipwreck, which is dateable. Photogrammetry models allow researchers close access to hard to see, or rare archaeological finds like this example.
