More model informationThis is a piece of scoria created during the 1984 Krafla eruption in Iceland. Scoria is a highly vesicular (bubble-rich), dark-colored volcanic rock. Some parts of the rock as smoother than other parts, creating a textural difference that might resemble a fusion crust. However, the vesicles are a clear giveaway of the volcanic origins, when dissolved gasses in the molten rock escape an create the bubble-rich appearance. This effect also creates the bubbles in some industrial slags and smelts. Fusion crusts are often recognised by a clear discontinuity between a lighter-coloured interiour and darker exteriour created by ablation of the material.
