USS YP-389 is one of the very few US Navy vessels lost due to enemy action off North Carolina during WWII’s Battle of the Atlantic. On 19 June 1942 the converted fishing vessel YP-389 enaged in surface battle with U-701 resulting in the loss of YP-389 and six U.S. sailors.
