Grjóthlaðnar refagildrur má finna víða um land. Þær líkjast grjóthrúgum eða vörðubrotum, en þegar betur er að gáð má oft greina hlaðinn stokk undir grjótinu. Var agn, t.d. kjöt eða feiti, sett inn í stokkinn til að tæla dýrið inn í gildruna en um leið og það hreyfði við agninu, lokaðist gildran með þar til gerðum lokunarbúnaði, s.s grjóthellu sem tengd var við agnið með snæri. Talið er að veiðiaðferðin hafi verið stunduð frá fornu fari hér á landi, allt fram á 20. öld.

Remains of stone laid fox traps are widespread in Iceland. These traps often look like any other stone pile or a cairn but with a closer look one can notice a shaft underneath the stone pile. The bait is placed inside this shaft to entice the animal inside the trap. The bait was connected to a mechanism devised to close the trap as soon as the animal touches the bait. It is believed that this hunting method was practiced from very early on in Iceland, up until the 20th century.
