Leptictis was a genus of small insectivorous mammal from the late Eocene to late Oligocene of North America. They are extremely similar to their European relatives, Leptictidium. They were small bipedal mammals that share many early traits of eutherian mammals, as well as specialized features like their long tail and legs. Leptictis and Leptictidium have skull features that indicate a snout similar to the modern elephant shrew. This specimen of Leptictis features a skull and small amounts of postcrania adhered to the rock the fossil was found with.
