- State: Wyoming
Taxonomy: Reptilia>Chelonia>Baenidae
The Baenidae turtles were a family of Wyoming turtles that lived from the Jurassic to the Eocene, notable for surviving through the K-Pg extinction event. The shapes of their shells indicate a highly aquatic environment, streamlined for water motion in shape and depth. The Eocene-Oligocene boundary features a significant faunal turnover, particularly in aquatic and marine environments, potentially due to global cooling as indicated by oxygen isotopes from the boundary. This specimen shows a mostly complete and intact shell, with the inside filled with matrix.
