This interesting scan is of a Victorian parlour dome. There would be a glass dome covering whatever was inside. In this case it is handmade decorative flowers however all kinds of aestetically pleasing arts and crafts were housed inside.

These were extremely popular among the upper middles classes during the Victorian era and would demonstrate your wealth and taste. They could sit on the mantle above a fire or as a centrepiece on a table.
