More model informationThis police lantern, or bullseye lamp, was used by Victorian police in the 1880s for night patrols before electricity and oil street lamps. The lens focused and magnified light in one direction, allowing officers to see clearly. The hinged lens door provided burner access. The lantern had wire handles for prolonged holding and a clip for belt attachment. The top cone directed smoke away from the officer’s face. Turning the cone operated a shutter to cut off light, keeping the officer hidden. This functioned as an early ‘flash’ light.
