More model informationA small plaster likeness of the Virgin of Caridad de Cobre was once the central figure of a makeshift shrine built at the remote Marquesas Keys in Florida by Cuban refugees. The virgin was given offerings as thanks for a successful crossing from Cuba. “La Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre” is said to have first appeared over 400 years ago to three Cuban men caught in a storm at sea; they found her figure floating in calm waters, after they had prayed for relief from their plight. She is now the patron saint of Cuba. This figurine, donated by Key Wester Benjamin “Dink” Bruce, is on display at the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum in Key West, Florida, as part of the exhibit “Voyage to Freedom.”
