More model informationBaltimore’s Washington Monument, constructed 1815-1829, was the first major monument honoring George Washington, the first president of the United States.
The monument is ~178 feet (~54.5m) tall, and is located at the center of Mount Vernon Place, in Baltimore, Maryland.
It was designed by Robert Mills, who would later design the Washington, DC “Washington Monument” on the National Mall. Baltimore’s monument takes the form of a triumphal column, echoing those of the Roman emperors Trajan and Marcus Aurelius in Rome.
A statue of George Washington carved by Enrico Causici tops the column, and depicts Washington’s resignation as Commander-in-Chief.
