This seal depicting Queen Elizabeth was attached to a letter patent, from 12 March 1558, to the city of Southampton re-establishing an old decree by Queen Mary and King Phillip (https://skfb.ly/oGrTs). This granted Southampton the sole right of importing wine and exporting wool to and from the Levant.

The seal is part of a letters patent held within the collection of Southampton Cultural Services and has been laser scanned as part of a collaborative project between Southampton Cultural Services and the Department of Archaeology at the University of Southampton
