Located along the northern edge of Chicano Park, this 350-foot (107 m) mural commemorates a 1996 victory that saved culturally-significant murals painted on freeway support pillars throughout the park.
Following the Loma Prieta and Northridge earthquakes, Caltrans set out to retrofit highway overpasses throughout the state, including those in the park. Initial proposals would have damaged or obscured the murals, but after consultation with the community, engineers were able to find a solution where all retrofitting work was performed at the base and top of the support columns, without affecting the murals. Chicano Park was named a National Historic Landmark in 2016.
