Whale Barnacle

This is a barnacle that lives only on certain species of whales. Scientific name Coronula Diadema. It was found in an excavation of a shell midden near Elands Bay cave on the West Coast of South Africa. Early Hunter-Gatherers, the ancestors of the San, harvested whale meat from whales that had washed ashore. They then took the meat to the shelters where they lived, and cooked it. The barnacles would have then ended up as deposit in the shelter.
