Woodstown Coastal Promontory Fort, Waterford3D ModelNoAI
Woodstown promontory fort (SMR WA025-072----) lies on the eastern side of Annestown Beach on the Copper Coast of Co. Waterford. The promontory fort has two banks and ditches, a causeway, and a possible hut site on Green Island offshore. Investigations by the CHERISH Project have dated the fort to the early Iron Age though the ditch continued to be dug out into the early medieval period. It has been considerably eroded into smaller islets and recent cliff slumping has been reported on the western side of the embankments. In the fields surrounding the fort, there is evidence of two standing stones and a fuluch fia, which may be contemporary with the fort though could date as far back as the Bronze Age, and much more recently a lime kiln was built above the beach.
