More model informationA 17th-century stoneware kiln first excavated in 1974 and lifted in a wooden and steel box and moved to another part of Woolwich.
It was re-excavated in 2017 by Oxford Archaeology before being dismantled.
The kiln is dated to c 1660 and is believed to be the earliest stoneware kiln in England. It produced brown salt-glazed stoneware ‘bellarmine’ jugs that are stylistically indistinguishable from stoneware jugs imported from Germany, and have the same heraldic medallions and grimacing ‘bellarmine’ masks that decorate the imported versions.
