A wrist-mounted chainsaw designed for Worm Punk, a VR arena deathmatch movement shooter created for the capstone project of my Game Design major. Large and clunky, the chainsaw acts as the player’s melee secondary, the blade on the front extending outwards upon activation. The weapon is also a movement tool - the blade can be thrust into surfaces to drag the player along them, allowing for swift redirection upon hitting a wall.
The chainsaw was by far the most mechanically and technically complex model I made for this project. The texture on the chain is designed to be implemented with a panning shader to simulate it rotating at rapid speed, and the front section rotates to align direction and rotation with the player’s hand. In addition, this section unhinges to angle the blade downwards for backwards stabbing. To mechanically explain this, each paired blade is split into two sections whose chains run in opposite directions and interlink like gears.
