The Iverna was an iron-framed racing yacht built in 1890 in Portsmouth. She was designed as a competitor for the 1891 Americas Cup. At the time she was a top of the range vessel, and was raced until 1926 by John Jameson, after which she was sold and converted to a house boat. Deposited here on the tidal mud of the Kingsbridge Estuary, Devon, after springing a leak in 1974. A support strut broke, she collapsed in the mud, and has lain there ever since.
The hulked vessel, and the abandoned smaller boats and barges around her, lie in deep mud only exposed at low tide. A UAV captured the images for this model, but flight was restricted by the proximity of low hanging trees and only about half of the photos were usable. Nevertheless, it’s a diffuclt site to reach and the model is a basic record of the iron framing of the time, if properly scaled.
