The Wyndham’s Oak is ~1000 yrs old & stands in a meadow by the river Stour behind St. Nicholas’ parish church. It is named after Judge Hugh Wyndham who used to sit within the tree & smoke his pipe to relax & contemplate. Its history takes a darker turn towards the end of the 17th century, when rebels were supposedly hanged from it following the failed Monmouth rebellion of 1685. The current land owner remembers losing a cow, only to find it two days later stuck firmly inside the hollow trunk!
The SCATTER project was funded by the Woodland Trust & carried out by researchers from UCL with logistical support & ancient oak expertise from The Ancient Tree Forum. If visiting ancient trees, please be respectful to these living legends and their custodians.
