This brick pillar, about 4 meters high, stands northwest of the Oberlaa spa gardens and is a remnant of the Laaerberg brick kilns.
For decades, kilns and clay pits shaped the southern Viennese landscape, producing millions of bricks that fueled the city’s growth. With production declining from the mid-20th century, large pits and industrial areas were left behind.
For the Vienna International Garden Exhibition 1974 (WIG 74), these sites were transformed into a spacious park with themed gardens, ponds, and recreation areas. After the exhibition, the area became the Oberlaa Spa Park—today one of Vienna’s most popular green spaces with rose gardens, meadows, leisure facilities, and a thermal spa.
