This juvenile hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) specimen (TN015A) was collected from a zoo near London and prepared by Russell Coope, who left the bones in the care of the Lapworth Museum. It is used as an educational aid both for visitors to the museum and students at the University of Birmingham. Despite only being a juvenile, this individual would likely have been around 1.5 metres tall at the shoulder, and has all the features that make the hippopotamus such a spectacular animal. Its anatomy reflects the stresses the bones and muscles would be under in order to support the weight of the animal and allow it to move quickly both in water and on land.
