The Wayne County Mastodon was found in a creek bed in the southwest part of the county in August of 2024. Over a 12-day dig, local volunteers as well as archaeologists from the Office of the State Archaeologist found the first well-preserved mastodon skull in the state of Iowa.

Affectionately named "Dolly" by the excavation team, the skull and other remains are now housed at the Office of the State Archaeologist, as well as the paleontology repository in Trowbridge Hall. Conservation work is underway, with the skull being the main focus for preservation by staff at OSA. Once the skull and other remains are fully preserved, they will be donated to the Prairie Trails Museum in Corydon, Iowa, for display.
