Sketchfab Progressive Challenge, Round 2: Mythological Creature

Back to overview

Welcome to Round 2 of our first Progressive Challenge, a new type of challenge that draws on the many skills of our community members to take a model from idea to completion in four neat steps. We have a winning sculpt from the first round, and now it’s time to retopologize, unwrap, bake, and texture it.

    Is bribing a judge allowed?

  • There is a problem with these rules I believe?

“Your upload must be <50MB total, including model and textures"

This leaves barely room for maybe two materials' worth of textures, not counting the mesh. Four 2048x png channels for a single material would still be 30 MB.

To get a decent detail on this model I would need at least 300 pixels per meter (and it would be very low quality), and Ideally I would prefer to go as high as 800 ppm. This would probably be a few hundred MB I'm guessing.

    • unless perhaps the judges were wanting 1024x texture detail?

Allowing larger uploads would give an unfair advantage to paying Sketchfab users. I’m sure you can keep it under 50MB – there are tons of excellent examples of that on Sketchfab already 🙂

      • Hmm that is a bit confusing because I know that I’ve uploaded multiple 2k textures sets on a free account (such as my rhino savager), but I also know that the model is far over 50 MB.

      • I will take your word for it and just keep making the model as I would normally on a free account. We’ll see what happens ^_^. If my entry goes over the limit, at least I’ll have made something super awesome for you guys in any case.

You can probably save some space by converting those textures to JPG with a high quality setting. Also, ZIP your files before uploading.

      • I’ll do that. I will try to keep the file size at the minimum, thanks ^^

Model is good and good for retopo practice. i’ll end texturing and upload these model after contest.

I can’t seem to find it anywhere in the rules or on Sketchfab in overall but I don’t see other participants do it. Is having a custom background allowed or does it count as postprocessing?
