Could you introduce yourself to our readers: Who are you and where are you from?

Hi, my name is Thomas Veyrat. And I am a french 3D artist based in Paris. Originally a Product Designer, my 3D skills have always helped me in my carrier. And today I am a freelance and a teacher in 3D animation and creation. Here’s my new reel:

Can you tell us about what aspects of 3D you specialize in?

My main skills are 3D modeling and texturing. And I enjoy working on concept arts, animations, lights and renderings.

How did you first get started in 3D? What attracted you to it in the first place?

It started when I was a student with the Amapi 3D and Artlantis applications. Good for learning the very basis of 3D. However it truly begun when I created my first skins and models for the Unreal Tournament games. It’s awesome to create games assets and see them come to life. I used to make a LOT of robots, like the Xan MkII – a character model I did for Unreal tournament III :

Do you have any academic training or are you self-taught?

Self taught. And I do my best to keep up to date.

Tell us a little bit more about your workflow/process?

I always write first. The writing process is important, especially for my animation projects. Then I sketch and paint a lot of drawings until I am satisfied with my creation.

Afterwards, I can start modeling. During this process, I always work with blueprints and a lot of references. And then depending of the model, I work with either Zbrush or Photoshop (or both) for the textures and additional details.
The final step before publishing to Sketchfab, is to organize properly the shaders, the textures and the lights of the scene.

What project(s) are you working on right now?

Several projects ! Some are starting and some are almost done. This summer I finished this one:

How did you come across Sketchfab and how does it help you in your career?

I met Alban and Cedric during a meetup about 3D printing. Sketchfab is multipurpose tool for me : educational for my student, preview for my clients, showcase quality real time models.

Of all your pieces currently on Sketchfab, which one are you the most proud of and why?

A difficult choice, but I will go for the “Cave of Wonders” :

It was the first time I was fully satisfied with my light on Sketchfab. And I am huge fan of the Disney Aladdin movie. Later, I might make a character from Toy Story !

Where does your creativity come from?

Almost anything.

What advice would you give to someone interested in 3D?

If someone is serious about getting started in 3D, the first important step is to try a few softwares. I suggest a software with a supportive community and/or a lot of free tutorials available. And if it turns out quite well, it is time to learn a bit of each area (modelling, texturing, animation,…) and find what you are best at. Because in order to get a job in the industry, you need a strong main skill ! And I firmly believe it is important to be a bit well rounded.

3D can a be a real pain in the ass, but the prize is worth it.

Thanks!

– Bart
