More model informationThis is a 3D Atlas of the Roman Empire from the founding of the republic in 509 BCE until the final division of the empire into Eastern and Western halves in 395 CE. The front of the model shows Roman territory in 509 BCE and each subsequent year is placed behind the previous year in order until the division of the empire in 395 CE. Thus Caesar’s conquest of Gaul in 50 BCE is physically half-way back on the Atlas as 50 BCE is about half-way between 509 BCE and 395 CE.
Five notable periods in Rome’s history have been annotated in the model, and the corresponding years have been independently colored.
