Shoodaun - Sheela-na-Gig - GA071-0790023D ModelNoAI
In the entrance porch of the Catholic church at Newcaslte. It consists of a damaged corbel on the under-surface of which is a weathered carving of a Sheela-na-gig. The original location of this corbel is unknown though it is likely to have been of local provenance. In that regard, it has been suggested (Mannion 2008, 18) that it may have been associated with Templemoyle medieval church (GA084-127002-). While this Sheela is badly damaged the digital survey revealed number of faint facial features, including a mouth, nose, an ear on the left and right eye. It is possible the top of the corbel displays hair, but this is not clear from this recording. The setting on a corbel may suggest it is of early date. The Sheela is holding pulling both legs backwards, with her hands behind her legs to reveal her vulva. She has detailed fingers and feet. There is no clear evidence of breasts, but this may be due to the poor condition of the stone.
