Child’s Shoe, Bar Hill, Antonine Wall3D ModelNoAI
A child’s leather shoe (calceus, type A) for the left foot, 15 cm long, found in a refuse pit or ditch at Bar Hill fort. The discovery of children’s shoes within the rubbish at Bar Hill indicates that it was not just soldiers living in the fort. Usually the commanding officers would have their wives and children living with them, and the size of this one suggests it belonged to a toddler, probably around 2-4 years old.
The Antonine Wall stretched right across Scotland, from the Clyde to the Forth. Constructed around 142 AD, and occupied for only 20 years, the remains of its ramparts, steep ditches, forts and bathhouses are still visible today. Since 2008, it has been part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site.
