1932 MG J2 car excavation, Larkhill

This car was found buried on Salisbury Plain during the excavation of Larkhill (Wiltshire), a site that included a great deal of 20th-century military activity. It is the remains of a 1932 MG J2, serial number J2912 which had been parked here and dismantled for repair by a local soldier. Judging by the tyre pattern it was probably in use until the 1960’s, and during its lifetime underwent numerous repairs by its owners, it even had brackets fitted to support a new non-MG engine.

It is unknown why it was abandoned mid repair, but it may be due to the introduction of the MOT test in 1960, which saw the end of many old cars that had been kept going by their owners with DIY engineering.
