I was at a stop light on a hot day. The concrete was hot enough to cook an egg on and a homeless woman on the corner began to cough in fits. She was my grandmothers age and her skin had open sores.
I felt horrible and began to look around in my car for water or a snack. I didn’t have any money. She saw me looking around and walked towards me hopefully so I rolled down my window and showed her my empty wallet and said, “I want to help but I don’t have money..”
“Do you think money can help me?”
The response struck me as I drove on. I passed a wide green golf course and a wonderfully vibrant park and I noticed there was not one fruit bearing tree.
This piece imagines a sustainable city where fruit bearing trees are allowed to grow naturally without opposition from agriculture lobbyists. These reimagined parks could export fruit to distribution centers and if you volunteer at the park you can eat for free that day. Food grows on trees and water pours from the sky…we shouldn’t be going hungry in 2018.
