More model informationEarly free settler’s cottage c.1820. East coast Tasmania.
This is a large model so it may be slow to load on some connections. Zoom in to view the interior or use the arrows at the bottom of the screen to take a tour.
The original settlers hut, which survives within the cottage, was probably built as a temporary shelter around1820. It was of timber slab construction with wattle and daub gables and thatched roof . Within a few years it had been extended at both ends. Later additions of timber and stone largely obscured the original hut and are now falling away. A shingled roof, which completley enclosed the original roof frame, was built over the whole cottage and was later reclad with the existing corrugated iron.
