The mosque withstood various hostile invading forces over its 850-year history. The destruction of the Minaret in 2017, which has remained standing, leaning protectively over the city for centuries, is considered a national tragedy. During the battle for the liberation of Mosul, a human chain made by Moslawis, who risked their own lives, impeded the complete destruction of the Minaret. This object was digitised by participants (Omar) during the Tech 4 Heritage workshops in Mosul, Iraq.
