Little London kilns - key and square tile kilns3D Model
The key shaped kiln had some interesting features. The walls in the bowl of the feature had been relined with clay, that was still visable, suggesting re-use of the kiln. There was also an interesting collection of crescent shaped tiles that were uniform in length, depth and curvature. With no evidence (as of yet) to link these tiles to the structure of the kiln, it is possible that this kiln specialised in the production of these crescent tiles.
The square kiln had some fantastic standing structural walls within it. Arched walls that would have formed part of the internal features of the kiln had collapsed towards each other leaving the parallel sections you can see here. There were a lot of pottery sherds from this feature, specifically from flagon vessels, suggesting either flagon maufacture or at the very least, water and wine consumption during construction. Excavated by Bunny Waring, Peter Brown and Alba Claro Garcia. Photoscales are 2m and 1m long.
