The statue of “Voltaire sitting in a chair” - one of the masterpieces of the largest French sculptor of the XVIII century. Jean-Antoine Houdon. It was executed in 1781 by the order of Catherine II and two years later it was delivered to Russia. The great French thinker of the Enlightenment posed for Gudon shortly before his death. The sculptor depicted Voltaire in robes that looked like antique, giving him a resemblance to the ancient philosopher, as if recalling in this way the continuity of philosophical ideas.
