Roman, white marble sarcophagus, Ostia, Lazio, Italy. Dated circa 200-300 CE, it has three carved scenes likely depicting the deceased and family, as well as symbolism they may represent the deceased’s occupation or status in life. The central scene shows a man on the right holding a scroll and a grieving woman on the left. Between them are three children. The carved backdrop is of a draped fabric screen or curtain. The left scene depicts two women, one of whom is carrying a vessel, possibly an offering for the gods. The right scene is similar to the left, but with two men.
The scenes are framed by four Corinthian columns that support three arches; the outer two are typical round Roman arches, while the centre is an apex typical of temple roofs. The columns have spiral fluting, with the first, third and fourth rotating to the right and the second to the left. Acanthus leaves decorate the space above the arches.
The model was created from 23 colours images using VisualSFM, Geomaic Studio and Meshlab.
