The largest neoclassicist master Bertel Thorvaldsen received from his contemporaries the honorary nickname “Danish Fidium”. He spent most of his life in Rome, where he headed the Academy of St. Luke. Thorvaldsen’s works were well known in Russia. The sculptor repeatedly turned to the image of Ganymede - a beautiful cowherd boy, whose beauty, according to the ancient Greek myth, was captivated by Zeus himself. At the behest of the thunderer, the eagle kidnapped Ganymede and brought him to Olympus, where he became a cupbearer and a favorite of the gods.
