More model informationIlaria del Carretto was an Italian noblewoman and the wife of the 15h century Lord of Lucca, Paolo Guinigi.
Ilaria was born in Zuccarello, and died in Lucca at the age of 26, after giving birth to her second child. Upon her death, Guinigi commissioned the sculptor Jacopo della Quercia to design a marble sarcophagus. On the lid of the sarcophagus, a likeness of Ilaria reclines with her dog, symbolizing fidelity, seated at her feet.
The tomb was not actually used to house the remains of Ilaria, and she is buried in the Guinigi chapel in Santa Lucia in San Francesco.
