Attic funerary lekythos in marble, from the 5th century B.C.E. Used as a grave marker. Found near Athens (Piraeus?), Greece. INV: 1627, National Museum of Denmark, Copenhagen.
Description: Three persons placed on a base line. The deceased is the man seated on a chair, the two women his wife and daughter. All named by inscriptions: Filourgos, Nikarete, Kallippe (respectively). All three are wearing himation, the women chiton under the himation. The first woman (wife) are greeting the husband with a handshake. Inscriptions: The original inscription placed over the seated man “Filourgos euthoigou Peira(i)eus” have been modified post-finding to “Falthureos Futoinou....”. The inscription over the first woman from the left reads “Nikarete Filourgou thygater. Over the woman on the right: “Kallippe kallimakou”. height: 64.0 cm (without restaurations). Restaurations: The mouth, the backside of the handle and the base including stem is missing. The stem and base is restored in a greyish white marble. Acquired: 1881.
