This small water worn igneous cobble measures 88mm x 35mm and was found placed / discarded in the threshold of a prehistoric hut circle excavated in Upper Wharfedale on 12 August 2018. The stone, which has been worked into shape on at least one side (probably more), seems to sit most comfortably in the right hand. Chips, scratches and abrasions on the underside indicate it’s been used as a tool of some sort. Suggestions so far have included a ‘muller’ used with saddle querns, a hammer stone, broken mace head and small mortar……. Research is currently ongoing and further opinions are being sought.
Other finds from the trench included a few fragments of early prehistoric pot and much later iron.
This decimated textured model was created from 47 partially masked images generating 20+ million vertices. The higher resolution model has a surface measurement around 0.1mm.
