Toxodon – fragment of right of jaw with 5 teeth3D Model
Description: This is a 3D laser surface scan of the right side of the lower jaw with 5 cheek teeth and fragments of 5 anterior teeth / incisors. Collected in 1832 by Darwin, it is between 126,000 and 11,700 years old. This has been scanned as part of the Museum’s Darwin Fossil Mammals digitisation project. Find out more at www.nhm.ac.uk/darwinsfossils.
Comments: When describing this, Owen was unsure whether to allocate this to the same species as the cranium found in Uruguay. In 1866, Herman Burmeister gave it a new name: Toxodon darwinii after Darwin. T. darwinii likely represents the same species as Toxodon platensis.
Specimen number: NHMUK PV M 16566
