More model informationThis model is of a late 19th Century Kelp workers bothy in a settlement group of around 20 such structures on Bornish machair, South Uist. The bothies were built into mounds with the stonework acting as revetments to prevent collapse of the walls internally. They were occupied until the middle of the 20th Century by family groups involved with kelp processing. They would have been roofed with turf over driftwood ‘rafters’
