Seal matrix, recovered from the protected wreck site of the Hazardous, wrecked in 1706. Recorded using 3D structured light scanning. Le Hazardeux was built in L’Orient France in 1699. The ship was loaned to the French privateer Beaubriand-Lévesque in 1703, in November that year she was spotted and after a battle lasting several hours she was taken as a prize. After repairs she was taken into service as Her Majesty’s ship Hazardous in March 1704. Returning from Virginia as one of the escorts to a fleet of merchant ships in September 1706, however in poor weather conditions heading up channel off Kent, she was wrecked in Bracklesham Bay on the 19th November 1706. It is believed to be part of a seal matrix depicting a “Griffin on torso”. Research by the Hazardous Project team has found it could have belonged to Capt. Richard Browne, or Lieutenant Burrows, it seems both families had Griffins within their family crest. Be sure to follow the Hazardous Projects ongoing work: http://hazardousproject.info/index.html
