Early Dynastic Coffin

This early dynastic period coffin dates from the Second Dynasty and is made of cedar wood. This coffin was excavated at Kafr Tarhan by the noted Egyptologist Sir Williams Flinders Petrie himself. Although it is very small, it was not intended for a child’s coffin. A fully grown adult would have been placed in this coffin in a fetal position. The person who owned this coffin would have been a close relative or perhaps even a friend of the king himself. If you look closely at the planks on the side of the coffin, you will see the marks of the adze, a chisel-like tool the carpenter used thousands of years ago when making this coffin.
