The Archeological Collection of the Gasparri family is mainly made of finds discovered during the excavations conducted by the Archaeological Superintendence in the first half of 20th century in Baratti.

The lands around the gulf, in fact, were intensively excavated starting from 1915 to recover the ancient iron waste, still rich in mineral, to be used in modern blast furnaces. Giulia and Tommaso Gasparri, owners of the Populonia estate since 1936, in case of discoveries had the right to be compensated with money or part of the actual discoveries. This law allowed Tommaso and his wife to receive from the Superintendence a large amount of ancient objects, which became the basis of the Collection.

Today's collection is the outcome of over seventy years of history. To the original 1943 collection were added the findings discovered during the 1950s governmental excavations, and a rather miscellaneous group of artifacts recovered off-site, in the surroundings of Populonia and Baratti.
