The stylistic dating of the nave transept to c.1240 (Alexander 2006, 162) suggests two label stops terminating the archway over the eastern altar recess represent King Henry III and Eleanor of Provence. The other label stops were apparently foliate. McAleer (1996, 260-261) dates the style of the five foliate and grotesque bosses of the quadripartite timber vault to around c.1340, although Alexander (2006, 162) dates the vaulting to shortly after the c.1240 completion of the transept. The bosses have been repainted and gilded, possibly during the c.1875 restoration of the South Nave Transept by Sir George Gilbert Scott (DRc/Emf/65/3). A damaged corbel depicting the Virgin Mary features surviving blue pigmentation. Its opposite, the corbels along the eastern clerestory and the weathered exterior sculpture also probably date from the c.1870 restoration.
