Cast of Marie Ramsay Seal, NRS3D ModelNoAI
Marie (or Marjory) Ramsay was the second wife of Sir David of Brechin and this is a scan of a cast of what is believed to be her family seal.
In 1296, Sir David swore fealty and homage to King Edward II of England, but while he promised to serve him in the War against the King of France, he subsequently fought for Scotland.
He may have been imprisoned at Bannockburn in 1314, but Marie got a letter of safe conduct to Scotland to secure his release.
Sir David is listed in the Declaration of Arbroath as one of the barons and in 1320 was hanged for refusing to speak of a plot against King Robert I.
The reason for inclusion of Marie Ramsay’s seal on the Declaration, on behalf of her husband, remains a matter of speculation.
The Declaration of Arbroath, and the original seal, is under the care of National Records of Scotland. The seal cast this 3D model is based on, is held in the Court of the Lord Lyon Office. The model was reproduced with the kind permission of the Lyon Office, and scanned by HES.
