The best preserved mill in a group of three standing horizontal water mills, complete with the mill streams, footbridge and a dam( further upstream). The mill dates from the 19th century or earlier and was last used in the 1940s. Water is directed onto one side of a horizontal paddled water wheel, this was connected by a shaft though the floor of the mill house directly to a single pair of millstones above. Although inefficient compared to a vertical wheel, horizontal mills were simple to build and maintain.
Restoration work was carried out in the 1980s and 2009, which has helped with how good the site still looks today. The internal equipment is in operational condition.
I created a further model using Kite aerial Photography that shows all the mills from the dam to the sea https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/huxter-mills-sandness-shetland-isles-scotland-e55cd1ceb243410590d55c024844438b
